Editorial cartoons for Nov. 20, 2022: Trump’s 3rd campaign, election consequences, Twitter meltdown

Former President Donald Trump announced his candidacy for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination last week, getting a jump on rivals and a possible shield to hold off various criminal investigations and a subpoena from the Jan. 6 committee.

Editorial cartoonists reacted to Trump’s third presidential bid by drawing him as Frankenstein (Nick Anderson), the driver who crashed the GOP car in the midterm elections (Drew Sheneman), a groaning Statue of Liberty (Steve Breen) and a king assailed by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (David Horsey).

Fallout from the midterms also was a hot topic this week. Republicans took over the House of Representatives. Joey Weatherford drew the Capitol upside down with the caption, “Now my party can get to work turning the House back in the right direction.” Outgoing Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced she would step down from leadership but retain her seat. Bill Bramhall draws Pelosi tossing aside her gavel after breaking the carnival “test your strength” game. Breen notes that the GOP majority means President Joe Biden becomes “another American forced to reduce spending.”

The saga of Twitter under new owner Elon Musk continues. The billionaire laid off half the staff and an unknown number of workers quit after Musk issued an ultimatum requiring them to commit to working in an “extremely hardcore” fashion. Bramhall draws Musk as captain of a sinking ship.

Other topics in the editorial cartoons include the meltdown of cryptocurrency exchange FTX; executions in pro-life Texas; and Russian bombing of civilian targets in Ukraine.

Cartoons were drawn by Nick Anderson, Bill Bramhall, Dana Summers, Drew Sheneman, Scott Stantis, Walt Handelsman, David Horsey, Phil Hands, Joel Pett and Joey Weatherford of Tribune Content Agency; and Steve Breen, Mike Luckovich and Michael Ramirez of Creators Syndicate.
