Portland Thorns announce roster status entering 2022-23 offseason

The Portland Thorns announced their updated roster Tuesday in the early stages of a post-championship offseason, the first look at the team before any additional moves ahead of the 2023 season.

15 players are under contract for Portland as of Tuesday, and the team picked up four contract options and declined one to bring the current total players on next year’s roster to 19.

Options were picked up for Christine Sinclair, Natalie Beckman, Taylor Porter and Gabby Provenzano. The option for Marissa Everett was declined and she departs after four seasons with the club.

The remainder of Portland’s roster — all currently under contract — includes Janine Beckie, Bella Bixby, Sam Coffey, Crystal Dunn, Kelli Hubly, Meghan Klingenberg, Natalia Kuikka, Emily Menges, Olivia Moultrie, Rocky Rodríguez, Yazmeen Ryan, Becky Sauerbrunn, Sophia Smith, Hina Sugita and Morgan Weaver — who signed a contract extension through at least 2024 on Tuesday.

Contract negotiations are ongoing with out-of-contract players Hannah Betfort, Shelby Hogan, Tegan McGrady and Meaghan Nally, along with free agent Michele Vasconcelos, the club said. Goalkeeper Abby Smith is also a free agent, but the Thorns gave no indication of any negotiations with Smith in their roster announcement release.

Lindsey Horan’s loan with Olympique Lyonnais expires in June 2023. The Thorns have yet to share how that will be handled.
