Readers respond: Divisive attack ads should backfire

All of us have been inundated by relentless political attack ads. None are more offensive than ads put out on behalf of one candidate for Oregon’s Congressional District 5, Lori Chavez-DeRemer, in her race against Jamie McLeod-Skinner.

These ads by the Congressional Leadership Fund Super PAC contain a lot of misinformation and are really designed to instill fear, attempting to show Jamie McLeod-Skinner as “other.” Several of the ads end with the ominous message “she’s one of them.” The implication of what that means is vague and designed to appeal to people’s fears. Is it fear that she is LGBT, amoral, an outsider or what? The effect is divisive and hateful. Hate and divisiveness are not Oregon values and we must condemn candidates who use this kind of tactic.
